Greetings! It has been ages since I updated this blog. This post is simply a listing of the Oscar winning makeup artists followed by the film they won for and the year they were awarded. I want to move forward using this blog to keep track of my research into movie makeups that are outstanding. I felt a good place to start was with award winning films in the category of Best Makeup.

one that I saw was The Duchess. It is available to rent and is up for
Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction. After seeing this movie,
which is based on the life of the Duchess of Devonshire Georgiana
Cavendish I feel as though I can never complain about anything in my
life again.

I found it to be a beautiful movie and though one could say the
story was depressing I just found it amazing that it is true. Hair was
phenomenal by Jan Archibald who won the oscar last year for La Vie en
Rose. The make up designer for The Duchess was Daniel Phillips who was
inspired by 18th century paintings by Joshua Reynolds and Maria
Cosway. Keira Knightly is so beautiful and the make up in this movie
makes her look like she stepped out of the famous portrait of the
duchess by Thomas Gainsborough.

I also rented In Bruges which is up for Best Screenplay. This movie
I found very, very depressing. It is a dark comedy and I, for the
most party, really enjoy dark comedies but this one was grey and I like
them black. There is a scene where one of the characters survives a
great fall. Kudos on this, very freaky and very gross. The way it was
shot with close up on the face yet you can see bits of blood and flesh
just out of focus was quite gruesome.

Movies, movies, and more...movies

The Wrestler is up for two oscars:
First up is Mickey Rourke for Best Actor (up against Richard Jenkins,
“The Visitor”; Frank Langella, “Frost/Nixon”; Sean Penn, “Milk”; and
Brad Pitt, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” Marisa Tomei is
nominated for Best supporting actress against : Amy Adams, “Doubt”;
Penelope Cruz, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”; Viola Davis, “Doubt”; and
Taraji P. Henson, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Mickey Rourke was phenomenal. What I was not expecting was all the
great make up. Lots of blood effects and scarring. Marisa Tomei is
also sporting some nipple piercings and quite a few tattoos. I really
liked this movie. The style they shot it in really made you feel like
you were walking with Randy through all of his experiences. Mickey
Rourke played it so that you felt sympathy but never pity. He was a
flawed character but a good person at heart. It also made me view
wrestling in a whole different way, as an art form, a type of
theatre, and wrestlers are artists, performers. The deli counter scene
was just precious and again it showed Randy as a person who has a
special talent of being able to connect, and actually needing to
connect with others. Just Awesome.

I also saw Hellboy II: The Golden Army. I was delighted that
Doug Jones' voiced his character Abraham Sapien this time around. I
adore Doug Jones. I worked with him on Angel of Death in October and
he impressed me so much with his personality and professionalism.

2009 Oscar Nominees for Best Make up

I do not understand what happens to me during this time of year. I
seriously feel like a kid on Christmas morning during award season.
There is no rhyme or reason and I have decided not to analyze it but to
just enjoy it. Since finding out the nominees yesterday morning I have
managed to watch 5 of the nominated movies. I caught Benjamin Button
and Slumdog Millionaire in the show and I rented Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda
and The Visitor, man do I love the redbox. If I had to marry a vending
maching it would be the redbox, it is the coolest invention since
velcro, tab, and the walkman.

Best Make up Nominees:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Greg Cannom a 9 time nominee

The Dark Knight, John Caglione Sr. and Conor O'Sullivan this the 2nd time for both

Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Mike Elizalde and Thom Floutz both 1st time nominees

I have seen all these films expect for Hellboy II and I can't wait to check it out.

L.A. photo shoot

So I just had a photoshoot this last Sunday and I had the opportunity to work with a new photographer. It was a great experience and I want to share it. The photographer is Adam Bouska you can check out his work on his website: http://www.bouska.net/ Adam really impressed me with his working style. He was great communicating what he wanted and needed and he had a great energy and spirit. He has beautiful work and I definitely see him going far.

We were working on portfolio shots for young actor Brant Daughtery. I had worked with Brant back in Chicago on a short film that he co-wrote co-produced with Director Christopher Hayden. You can check more about their work on Chris' blog: http://quispychronicle.blogspot.com/

I am happy to be working again with these great people who I had wonderful experiences with back home in the Midwest. It is making L.A. seem more and more like home to me.
<!--

Make up Artist 2009

I can not even believe that it has been so long since my last blog
entry. I had quite an interesting 2008 professionally and personally.
Where I ended the year was miles away from where I started the year,
both literally and figuratively. It was a year that has made me look
ahead and realize that I have no idea what the future holds for me.
That being said I am still all about making plans, I just know that
nothing is set in stone, new opportunities are always around the corner.

Since my last blog entry I have relocated to Los Angeles. I am still
back in the Midwest from time to time for certain jobs and of course
most of my family and close friends are there. As for now I am loving
my new location and I am excited for all the opportunites that are out
here and anxious to take advantage of them.

I am also excited to share with you one of the my first jobs out
here in L.A., feature length film Angel of Death. The trailer is now up
for your viewing pleasure:

http://www.crackle.com/c/Angel_Of_Death

I had a wonderful experience working on it and I was able to meet some great people. Love to hear any feedback you have on it!

Hoping to make updates to my website in the next week so check that out, as well:

Crazy 80s make-up (actually the show debuted back in 1978 and it's last episode was in 1991) Now I am really devoting this blog to make-up but I must throw in that the hair is quite impressive as well. It is absolutely huge. It defies gravity. It is like a cloud of cotton candy hair fluff following the actresses around.

Back to make-up: the eyeliner is always apparent and the eye shadows, not necessarily in super bright colors, extend from the lash line all the way up to the eyebrow. And the shading techniques are beautifully and skillfully applied, but just so excessive, especially compared to the make-up on t.v. nowadays.

The thing that I especially love is the fact that regardless of what is going on each actress has a full face on. The scene that inspired this blog entry was a phone conversation between two female characters. What was outstanding was that it was nighttime and they were both in bed just about to go to sleep- in full out make-up! thick eyeliner, shimmery eye shadows and big glossy lips. Hate to see their pillowcases the next morning- yucky!

These make-ups are very dated yet, I have to say beautiful and ultra glamorous.

There are NO hair crimpers at Target!

Ok, so I went out last weekend with my sister and decided to crimp her hair for our night out. Crimped hair is just too much fun, it gives you that 80s party girl wildness. Also makes you want to stick a plastic bone in your hair and put on your hottest Betty Rubble dress - j/k, but not really.

Anyways I mentioned to the girls that we were getting ready with that I had to search high and low for my crimper (I finally procured it at a Sally's, brand is Gold'n'Hot), and I was told that there are crimpers galore at Target. Well I just went to two different ones and didn't find any crimpers. However if anyone does know a Target (or any other store other than Sally's) that does carry crimpers please let me know!

Make-up Brushes

I just recently picked up two new make-up brushes at M.A.C. that are fabulous: #134 and #205.

The #134 is an extra large paddle-shaped brush that, though a bit pricey, is a must have for your kit. I can't believe that I did so long without it! It is the perfect brush for all over powder/bronzer coverage. It has a shorter handle that fits comfortably in the hand. The thick and full brush covers a large surface area on the face and/or body, so you are able to get a more even tone in one sweeping motion.

The #205 is a fan-shaped mascara brush made of synthetic fibers. This brush is ideal for really getting those bottom lashes. I find it much easier to control mascara application with this brush because I am able get from root to the tip of the lash quickly and smoothly.

Eyeliner! part 2

The previous entry I had on eyeliner was primarily aimed at the make-up artist beginner and now I want to focus this entry on sharing a new product that a more advanced make-up artist needs in their kit: Napoleon Perdis' China Doll Eyeliner.

This eyeliner is from a new line that I found when I was in L.A. in June. Napoleon is a make-up artist from Australia with his own line and also a make-up academy in Sydney. They have a gorgeous brand new store that I happened upon on Hollywood Blvd., just a few blocks from Grauman's Chinese Theatre. This concept store makes you feel beautiful just by walking in, with it's bright decor and plush atmosphere. The sales people are all very knowledge about the products, ready to give demos and full of great energy. Actually it was quite tricky leaving the store since I walked in with three of my make-up artist friends we could have stayed there for hours testing out the products.

So back to the eyeliner..it is a gel consistency so it goes on quite smoothly, once it's on though it will not budge through sweat or tears. I picked up both the Equinox (black) and Heaven (blue). However I did find some problems with the Heaven not going on quite as smoothly as I'd like, but Equinox is a dream item for anyone's kit.

These concept stores are only on the west coast for now, but I believe that this line is also carried in Sephora. And you can always check out their website:
www.napoleonperdis.com

*On a side note I also picked up a lip pencil there, Rubis, which was a perfect match for a lip gloss I have from Rouge Make-up Studio called Miami. They are a beautiful bright coral color, perfect for this time of year when the summer is winding down and you have a lot of color in your skin. It can also give you a great retro 1950's look.<A href="http://www.On a side note I also picked up a lip liner there Rubis which was a perfect match for a lip gloss I got from Rouge Make-up Studio called Miami. Great work on piercings, tattoos, scarification, body paint, spfx/blood works, and prosthetics throughout the picture. The number of extras and the rich detail on each one is amazing. Of course after the film was through I had to watch the DVD extra making of and they said that they had up to 700 extras in one scene with over 200 make-up artists to help create the look. Another interesting fact in the DVD extra was the prosthetics noses applied to many of the characters to help achieve the traditional curled Mayan nose, which while watching the film completely added to the look yet was undetectable because of the quality of the work. There was also many prosthetic ears created, for the Mayans had big thick jade earrings stretching out their lobes. All the prosthetics throughout I believe were made with silicone to have the stretchy and movable quality that of cartilage in the nose and ears.

This movie is quite magical in it's power to completely transport the viewer to that time and place. I like to think that being in the make-up effect industry I have grown a tougher skin towards graphic detail in films, but this one had me at the edge of my seat, biting my fingernails. It's complete production from the sets, costumes, hair, actors performances, story & script, and direction is so on mark. Oh and there is also some really great animatronics with a jaguar and a wild boar.

Go check out the crew info on imdb the number of people working in make-up is astounding! This is totally a movie I would have loved to worked on.

Eyeliner!

I recently was asked for some advice by a male friend of mine concerning eyeliner and I thought I'd include what I recommended to him:

You can pick up eyeliner at any drugstore, CVS or Walgreen's. A nice basic black eyeliner I recommend is L'Oreal Pencil Perfect self-sharpening eyeliner in Ebony.

It is black on the outside with gold writing and a gold cap. Definitely get the self-sharpening one, the way it works is that you just twist it up once you've worn it down. This way you don't have to worry about buying an eyeliner sharpener or possibly scratching your eye when the liner gets too low and the tips of wood are sticking up.

Now for application: Key is to start out with a little cause you can always add more but it is hard to remove once it's on. (Actually you might as well pick up some eye make-up remover at the store too, cause eyeliner can take days to come off-and just basic soap and water won't work that well and may irritate your eye) So back to the application, rim your bottom lash line with the liner using a light touch, you could even just dot it on then take a Q-tip or cotton swab and swab over the area you applied. At that point step back from the mirror and see if you like the effect or if you want to make it heavier. If you want it heavier just repeat the step above until you get to the look you desire.

I don't suggest you line the top lid to begin with, especially for guys I think that just eyeliner on the bottom is the most effective. However upon application you are now a make-up artist and as an artist you call the shots. So experiment with it. There really aren't any rules - you can even get some eyeliners in different colors - start out perhaps with browns or grays and go from there.

As for removal take the eye make-up remover and put some on a Q-tip and swab off, depending on how much liner you put on will determine how easily if comes off. You'll probably want to wash your whole face after wards because most make-up removers feel pretty greasy.

Well let me know if you have any other questions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally I think eyeliner looks great on guys, gives an edgy rock-star pirate look. I noticed just last Halloween that anyone dressed up like a pirate had the smoky eyes a la Johnny Depp - I don't think anyone will be able to dress up like a pirate in the future without it and we can all thank the brilliant artists who worked on the Pirates movies.

Midwest Haunters Convention

This weekend I attended the Midwest Haunter's Convention in Columbus, Ohio. This convention was primarily for owners and operators of haunted attractions. Their community is friendly and a positive environment where everyone is willing to share their experiences.

I was able to catch a few make-up workshops that were quite outstanding. A 2 part prosthetics workshop instructed by Scott Sliger was great because it was actually hands on. We built a few molds that we could take home and later build more latex prosthetics. Gene Flaharty from Mehron gave a Moulage class and the Wolfe Brothers had demos on their paints, which I love. All instructors were very generous with their wide scope of knowledge.

Last year I worked at a haunted attraction in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. It was Cherry Red's Twisted House of Terror. It was my first experience with the fast paced SPFX make-ups that are required of a live action attraction and I found it very satisfying creatively. The make-ups that are needed are much more theatrical due to lighting and quickness of their viewing. I am hoping to find another haunting this Halloween that will be as challenging and as rewarding as last years.

IMATS '07

I am quite thrilled that in one week I will be in L.A. for the 2007 International Make-up Artist Trade Show. I am glad to finally be starting this blog since I have been thinking about it for some time now. Demands of a hectic work schedule have made me put it off till now.

Since I am starting phase two of my career as a make-up artist I am now able to concentrate on getting my "stuff" out there. That "stuff" will included movie make-up reviews, personal work scenerios, and a lot of other stuff that I am sure you will find utterly fasinating

so I will leave you now with the words of Audrey Hepburn's character from Love in the Afternoon,
"more later"
