Apocalypto: Movie Make-up Review

Where to begin!
Make-up just fabulous, a must see for all make-up artists in the industry. Great work on piercings, tattoos, scarification, body paint, spfx/blood works, and prosthetics throughout the picture. The number of extras and the rich detail on each one is amazing. Of course after the film was through I had to watch the DVD extra making of and they said that they had up to 700 extras in one scene with over 200 make-up artists to help create the look. Another interesting fact in the DVD extra was the prosthetics noses applied to many of the characters to help achieve the traditional curled Mayan nose, which while watching the film completely added to the look yet was undetectable because of the quality of the work. There was also many prosthetic ears created, for the Mayans had big thick jade earrings stretching out their lobes. All the prosthetics throughout I believe were made with silicone to have the stretchy and movable quality that of cartilage in the nose and ears.
This movie is quite magical in it's power to completely transport the viewer to that time and place. I like to think that being in the make-up effect industry I have grown a tougher skin towards graphic detail in films, but this one had me at the edge of my seat, biting my fingernails. It's complete production from the sets, costumes, hair, actors performances, story & script, and direction is so on mark. Oh and there is also some really great animatronics with a jaguar and a wild boar.
